  Water pollution in Sri Lanka

Water pollutants could derive from point and non-point sources. Point sources are discrete, limited and easily manageable (discharge pipes), while non-point sources (agricultural fields) are diffused and therefore difficult to control.  The main causes of water pollution in Sri Lanka can be categorized into few sectors; pollution due to untreated industrial wastes, pollution due to domestic waste discharge, pollution caused by agrochemicals (pesticides, fertilizers), pollution due to oil, saltwater upconing due to over extraction of water and contamination caused by natural events like tsunami or storm surges.
