Energy
resources of Sri Lanka
Energy
supply in Sri Lanka is mainly based on three primary
sources, water, biomass and petroleum (Figure 18). In
2004, hydroelectricity production was accounted for 710
kTOE (thousand Tonnes of oil equivalent). However, the
biomass energy supply was much more higher, 4513 kTOE,
while a little less was supplying by crude oil, diesel
and LPG (4132 kTOE). Now, it has grown up more and
towards coal since the coal power plant was established
at Norochcholai. Also new macro hydropower plants have
been added to the system (Upper Kotmale and Kukule Ganga).
Several mini hydropower plants are adding to the power
sector of Sri Lanka day by day increasing the power
supply. Additionally, the non-conventional power
sources, mainly the pilot wind power plants supply 3.6
kTOE to the system. However, with the development, the
energy demand has a growth rate of 3% annually, which is
impossible to supply by the renewable resources alone
and therefore we must proceed with non-renewable
resources although the prices increasing.
